Four wedding and a Funeral Introduction - Sound

The opening scene introduces a non-diegetic sound which is a calm music medley that sets the introduction to the characters and begins the flow of a steady atmosphere. This is abruptly interrupted by the diegetic sound when the camera focuses in on the alarm clock allowing the audience to hear the ticking, clearly a protagonist realising he is likely to be late, followed by diegetic vocal sound of him swearing.

You can then hear the diegetic sounds of the floor whilst his feet pound against it, once he reaches the second character in the scene he shakes her which makes her mumble, again a diegetic sound. She too then curses which is a diegetic sound. His suspenders, the ruffle of the keys, moaning and other diegetic sounds are used before the next scene is shown.

They are now in the car and they are trying to start the car (diegetic sound) and it frantically won't start, we hear the almost trademarked sound of a failed dying engine. Again followed by a diegetic curse. Followed by some little talk they then immediately skip to the diegetic scene in which you can hear the poor cars engine being pushed to the limits racing down the motorway. There is a very repetitive diegetic engine rumble throughout this short scene. The brakes are then slammed on, the audience can hear this very clearly and it matches the picture of the tyres coming to a halt therefore it is a diegetic sound. The near miss with the lorry produces more diegetic sound. The camera then changes to a high angle shot on the gear stick in which the sticky gears then grind into position.

You can then clearly hear the diegetic sound of the church bells ringing, put into context, this now brings to the audience partial story line behind the frantic behaviour. You can then hear the brakes coming on really quickly (Diegetic sound) and the car coming to a quick stop. You can then hear a lot of diegetic sound such as the car doors opening, dresses being zipped up, talking and others in the scene. Throughout it was a mostly diegetic ridden scene.

  1. Excellent detail, Cesco. You do well to link to the effect on the sequence's atmosphere and especially by beginning to link the camera work to sound. Well done.
